Getting Along with the World Around Me

Pastor Dennis Heppner
(my notes)

Ephesians 6:5-9

What are my responsibilities as a Christian in the market place?

SLAVES

Rome at that time
3 slaves for every free man
Or about 20,000 slaves
60,000,000 in the whole empire

Aristotle said that there could be no friendship between a slave and a master for they have nothig in common. The slave is no better than a beast except that it can talk.

In this situation, the gospel of love enters the society.

1 Cor 12:13
Gal 3:26-28

Currently, we are usually employers and employees.

1. Don't rebel in your workplace.
2. Do good work.

The amount of pay has no connection to the quality of your work. Because quality goes with your attitude.

The secret of good workmanship is to do it for the Lord.

3. Do expect God's blessing on your work.
Verse 8 know that the Lord will reward.

MASTERS
1. Do treat people properly.
2. Do not be abusive.
3. Do not be unreasonable in your demands.

A Christian must be the best employee in the workplace. His testimony involves working for the Lord.

PAUL MADE IT CLEAR:
Don't live like they live.
Ephesians 4:17

Repentance - Come Back!

Pastor Jonathan Heppner
(my notes)

Ezekiel 18:1-2

People think that what was wrong in their lives because of what their parents have done. Parwnts have sinned and God is punishing so they are suffering.

God says stop saying this.

Lamentayions 5:7

This was a popular way of believing that it is the mess of life is ue to the parents.

How much stuff do we cary not because we chose but because it is all we know?

Are we doomed to become just like what we experience or what we know?

Do we spend our lives runnin from what we used to be?

Ezekiel 18:3-4

Stop blaming your misery on others. Stop blaming who you are on others.

Pre-conventional wisdom
Conventional wisdom
Post-conventional wisdom

Matthew 5:21-22, 38-39, 43-45

Jesus is calling people to think in a new way.

Repentance - Metanoia

You need to look at these things in a very different way because the kingdom of God is near to you now.

Eph 1:17-19
Spirit of wisdom and revelation so your eyes of understanding would be enlightened.

Nobody can debate somebody to salvation. There must be a revelation and the decision will be made.

For every problem in relationships you need a revelation of Jesus to know how He sees it.

Iniquity - Avon
The results of sin in our ignorance

Exodus 20:5-6
Ezekiel 18:30

Teschuva - come back
972 times

Come back so the results of your sin will not be your ruin.

Each man stands alone. You do not have to carry the sins of those around you or before you.

Ezekiel 11:19

When you sin you become hard.

Ezekiel 36:26
Ps 137:1
Ezekiel 37:11-12

All Things New COG Makati

Pastor Jonathan Heppner

(my notes)

Church is people gathered together believing in Jesus in celebration of His giidness in our lives.

2Kings 2:19-22
This happened in Jericho, the first city Israelites conquered.

Joshua 6:26
Curse in rebuilding the city of Jericho.

530 years later
1 Kings 16:34
Ahab rebuilds Jericho

Deuteronomy 28
Verse 1 blessings
Verse 2 curses

Actions of parents have the power to bless the children.

It is not just about being punished. When you obey God can bless you but when you disobey, God cannot keep you in the blessing. He cannot protect you from the darkness because you have partnered with it. But if you disobey and return to God you will be restored.

1. Ring me a new bowl.
New - chadash in Hebrew
- renew

Ps 51:10
Ps 104:30
Isa 61:4
Lamentations 5:21

- make new or rebuild

Ps 33:3
Ps 40:3

2. Put salt in it.
Salt was extremely valuable.

Permanence
Loyalty
Durability
Fidelity
Usefulness
Value

Yeast makes the read rise. Salt kills the yeast.

Leviticus 2:13
Salt represents seal.
The covenant is that no matter how you choose to commit stupid things, you will be restored when You return to God.

Numbers 18:19

They were just like us, we need ideas or truths to be:
Tactible:intangible
Kinesthetic: hands on, physical

This is why there is altar call, raising of hands in praise. Expression is important.

2 Chronicles 30:9
Nehemiah 1:8
Jeremiah 15:19

"if you return, you will be restored"

Hosea 6:1-3
Joel 2:12, 25

When you return, He will restore and repay.

For Elisha, history is not an inscriber but a describer. Your history describes your past but not your future.

How many of us are chained to the mistakes or pain of our past because it has become a blend of describig and deciding?

Ok, there's a curse. Let's break it, let's go.

Accdg to Elisha curses are made to be broken, a new word can always be spoken.

Isaiah 61:1-7
Isaiah 51:1,5,8
Isaiah 55:10-13

When we give meaning to the wrong hings it is called superstition.

I Still Love Him...

I admit... I still love him... And it still hurts to think that there is no "us" anymore. I built a world with him, wished for things to get a long well with us but there is no such world anymore.

He was one of the people who brought back hope in my life. He was one of my greatest gifts. He made me feel special.

He may have also caused some pain to me. His practicality is way far from my illusions. I thought that he would choose to marry me than lose me... But he chose to lose me...

Up to now I still could not completely comprehend. I thought he has been the answer to my prayers. Up to now I still cannot see myself wih another. It's either him or be alone... I neve wished to be a martyr.

What is it that he is looking for? Why can't I be the man of his dreams? Why can't I be his wife? Why can't he be my husband?

I need to understand. I need to move forward and build my new world without him, without a partner... Men... They will do everything to make you believe that they care, that they love... But no, don't you dare. Once you give in to the feelings, they will reign, they will just break your heart.

I wanna move forward soon. I want to forget how I feel for him.

Mixed emotions... I hate him and love him, I'm sad, bitter, and angry but still hoping. I want to set this straight in my life...

Human Relationships COG Makati

By Pastor Dennis Heppner
(my notes)

Eph 5:22-23; 6-14

Husbands v23
1. Christ is the leader of the church by example. In the same way, husbands are to lead his wife and family.

Leading is:
- Not manipulation or control. A man is not to control his wife
- Not coercion. A man is not to threaten his wife.
- Not telling and then not doing. A man is not to oder his wife around.

When this letter was written, women were treated badly. Paul elevated the level of women at this time.

2. He is to love His wife as Christ loved the church - some personal sacrifice is involved. V30.

Men and women are equal in the eyes of God. We are all equal, we are all responsible.

3. He is to submit to Christ as Jesus submitted to His Father.

In the Body of Christ everyone is required to be submissive to Christ

Wives
1. She is told to submit to her husband. V.24
- as the church submits to Christ.

2. She is told to respect him.
Love is demonstrated in submission and respect.
During this time there are no love marriages. It is more of arranged marriages.

Children
Children are told to obey their parents.
Kids were never out of the control of their fathers til he fathers death. Children were of little value then, they can be thrown away.

Fathers/Parents
Do not exasperate your children.

We sometimes forget that customs change through the years. Do not force children to do what you used to do when you are a kid.

Do not force children to be what you want them to be but to be what the Lord wants them to be.

1. We forget that customs change from one generation to the next.
2. Too much control. Harsh discipline, no room for mistakes. Tea h them to make right decisions though.
3. Don't forget the duty of encouragement.
Discipline is good but don't forget encouragement.
Encouragement is needed for us to thrive in life.

Pray that your children would be what God wants them to be.

The Spirit of this teaching is Christ and not legalism. It is about modelling Jesus Christ in our homes.

Relationships - Getting Along with the Church Family

By Pastor Dennis Heppner
(my notes)

Ephesians 2:18-21

In Great Britain families have crests. It symbolizes their beliefs or philosophy. What is our family symbol today?

Belonging to a church family and what it means to belong to one.

A believer
- has been wonderfully blessed
- has been uniquely chosen
- has been forgiven of all their sins
- has a special mark on their life
- is God's masterpiece

As a child of God this is the basis of how we are.

Ephesians 4:3
1. Keep the unity of the Spirit.
As believers we have likes and dislikes but this cannot be applied to people... You cannot choose a brother or a preacher the way you choose your clothes.

Patience in the New Testament means patien e with people.

Make every effort... Even if you have to bite your tongue. Gentleness, kindness, self control.

God is big enough to pick you as special as the person beside you... This is not humanly comprehensible but everyone in God's household is important and special.

Even the people who are difficult for us is also God's chosen. Never criticize other Christians for whatever reason.

2. Learn to be truthful with each other in a loving way.
Eph 4:15
Speak the truth in love.
Tell the truth and make sure that your motive is that you care.
Respect the truth and still love

3. Do your part.
Eph 4:16
We are all joined and held together, growing and building in love.
If you do not do your part you will not feel that you belong.
The life is in the ministry.
You have the Holy Spirit as your breath and you have a part in the body.

4. Be very generous with forgiveness.
Eph 4:32

I forgive because at times I also wrong somebody... But in bad times we only remember others' behavior against us.

We are most critical of people who have hurt us. We usually react due to hurts that other people has caused so when somebody else does something, we react as if they initially hurt us.

Forgive each other just as in Christ God forgave you.

To live in God's house is to do what God says... We must do our part.
