Eph 5:22-23; 6-14
Husbands v23
1. Christ is the leader of the church by example. In the same way, husbands are to lead his wife and family.
Leading is:
- Not manipulation or control. A man is not to control his wife
- Not coercion. A man is not to threaten his wife.
- Not telling and then not doing. A man is not to oder his wife around.
When this letter was written, women were treated badly. Paul elevated the level of women at this time.
2. He is to love His wife as Christ loved the church - some personal sacrifice is involved. V30.
Men and women are equal in the eyes of God. We are all equal, we are all responsible.
3. He is to submit to Christ as Jesus submitted to His Father.
In the Body of Christ everyone is required to be submissive to Christ
Wives
1. She is told to submit to her husband. V.24
- as the church submits to Christ.
2. She is told to respect him.
Love is demonstrated in submission and respect.
During this time there are no love marriages. It is more of arranged marriages.
Children
Children are told to obey their parents.
Kids were never out of the control of their fathers til he fathers death. Children were of little value then, they can be thrown away.
Fathers/Parents
Do not exasperate your children.
We sometimes forget that customs change through the years. Do not force children to do what you used to do when you are a kid.
Do not force children to be what you want them to be but to be what the Lord wants them to be.
1. We forget that customs change from one generation to the next.
2. Too much control. Harsh discipline, no room for mistakes. Tea h them to make right decisions though.
3. Don't forget the duty of encouragement.
Discipline is good but don't forget encouragement.
Encouragement is needed for us to thrive in life.
Pray that your children would be what God wants them to be.
The Spirit of this teaching is Christ and not legalism. It is about modelling Jesus Christ in our homes.
